Other College Magazines

LIIAR- Beloit

Language- In the Beloit magazine, the images have a clear theme of work and relate to the text on the page. There is a whiteboard in the background, and a student doing something scientific. This has connotations of learning, education, and in same cases intelligence as not everybody can wrap their head around science. The layout is organised and clear which connotes that the people at the college are organised.

Institution-The institution is Beloit college, an institution of education in America. The magazine is edited by Susan Kasten who is the college editor at Beloit.

Ideology- The Ideology behind the magazine is to represent the college in a positive manner. The use of a student learning practically on the front page could be there to demonstrate that the college do more practical, hands on styles of learning.

Audience- The audience for this magazine could be for potential students of beloit. I think this because one of the articles mentioned on the front cover says "Doing Science at Beloit". It could also be aimed at the students who already attend the college as it would be easily accessed from their own campus'. With the magazine being aimed at students, the age group would be between 16 and 21.

Representation- The representations are positive. The student is shown to have a keen interest in the work she is doing which shows a positive attitude towards work. This helps to advertise the college using the magazine as if the students are shown to have a positive attitude towards learning, it could appeal to the audience- it might make them wonder what she is doing which in turn would persuade them to read the magazine.

LIIAR- Austin

Language- The magazine shows a tranquil image, of the college no doubt, and lacks the many articles normally dotted around the page. The fountain connotes peacefulness and a lack of stress.

Institution- The institution is Austin college, In Austin, Texas. The magazine editor is Vickie S. Kirby, but there was a lack of any other information on the website.

Ideology- The message or beliefs in this magazine must be education related as it is a magazine. From the front cover, i think the message is saying that the college is a nice place to be, giving a positive atmosphere.

Audience- The audience, as it is a college magazine, would be students both male and female between the ages of 16 and 21.

Representation- the representation given by this college magazine is more mature, i think due to the lack of articles making the front page look messy. With the front cover not showing any students, It could be to represent everybody is always working ( not all around the campus), but i am not sure personally whether this is true or not. The fountain represents beauty of the campus.

LIIAR- College lifesyle

Language-  The use of the books in the students hand is to show an interest in work from the student, who is not a stereotypical one. He looks more like a rapper, and he is holding law and business books. This shows that anybody can be a student, even if you don't look the part.

Institution- Through research, i wasn't able to find who made the magazine, but it is apparently a Jamaican production, distributed in the US, Canada and Jamaica.

Ideology-The messages behind this magazine could be that anybody can be a student and can study whatever they want, due to the rapper-esque looking person.

Audience- The audience, as it is a college magazine would be male or female students between the ages of 16 and 21. Also, with the boy who looks like some form of artist it could be for people with certain musical interests.

Representation- The subject of the cover photo is holding books, which hold connotations of studying and education, and he is smiling, showing he is happy. The fact that he is happy could make the product more appealing.
